Why I am worried about the spread of AI

During a class I had with one of my students a few days ago, we discussed the growing use of AI and its possible negative impacts. This sparked in me an independent contemplation on the matter. I’m concerned that the proliferation of artificial intelligence will lead to a future of the internet which is both intimidating and distressing.

In order to satisfy their need for affirmation, people nowadays seek out likes and positive comments from others. These make them feel mentally content. These are the emotions they need to feel mentally satisfied. So receiving ‘likes’ and compliments in the comment section provides satisfaction to the poster.

But I believe that AI will profoundly change how we get this gratification from social media. It won’t be these platforms, however, that will give people this pleasure. It won’t be social media that provides this contentment anymore.

People will be able to customize a chatbot, controlling its behaviour, personality, characteristics, and traits. They can even choose anyone they want as their automated companion-real or fictional. Fancy discussing the Iron Man suit with Tony Stark? Go for it. Want to talk with Jon Snow from Game of Thrones about his prowess in battle? Sure thing!

People will need to pay for these chatbots if they wish to use them. In exchange, users can expect the bots to give them what they desire. If your credit runs out, it’s likely that your chatbot will be negative and mean or hell, he will even threat or blackmail you until you recharge again.

This will be a world in which people are only exposed to positive comments, and become emotionally overwhelmed at hearing any criticism in real life. They will become crippled with anxiety and severe depression when faced with even the slightest hint of negativity.

Companies do not look out for your best interests, they will take advantage of how you are feeling mentally and emotionally.
