Zoologist Arik Kershenbaum: ‘We all want to know whether animals talk and what they’re saying’

I read an interesting article on The Guardian. Zoologist Arik Kershenbaum, known for his work on animal communication, specializing in wolves, gibbons, and dolphins, shares insights from observing animals in the wild. He explores the possibility of animals having names, accents, and the challenges of studying them. Kershenbaum emphasizes the relevance of understanding animal communication, especially in the context of the current environmental crisis. The article says that the evolution of language lead to the uniqueness of human capabilities, and the potential for communicating with extraterrestrial beings.

I think animals indeed, communicate with each other but it is not limited to sounds. Their gestures, their look, their movements must all be crucial factors in animal communications. What is more, they can also communicate with ultrasonic sounds as dolphins, whales or bats do. Understanding the communication of animals is one thing. But understanding the communication of extraterrestrials is a way more challenging thing. The problem is that we, humans cannot think in abstract concepts when it comes to the communication of extraterrestrials. They may not even know numbers, letters, they may even have a whole different concept of time and space. We need to think in a non-human way but the thing is, we cannot. So we will definitely have difficulties when we have the first contact unless they are somewhat human or they can communicate telepathically with us.
