Uncertainties Surround Hungary’s Delay in Ratifying Sweden’s NATO Membership

Turkey’s parliament has voted in favor of Sweden’s NATO membership, leaving Hungary as the only member yet to accept Stockholm’s bid. Despite an invitation from Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán to discuss shared concerns, Swedish Foreign Minister Billström unexpectedly declined a meeting, creating a more challenging situation for Hungary. Previously, Hungary delayed ratification, citing concerns about Sweden’s respect for Hungarian values. Defense expert András Rácz suggested the delay serves Russia’s interests, allowing Moscow time to prepare for NATO expansion in the Baltic Sea. NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg expressed optimism about Hungary’s ratification, but uncertainties persist in Hungary’s stance on Sweden’s NATO membership. The Turkish parliament’s decision awaits the president’s signature, and Hungary may struggle to explain its delay without specific complaints or demands toward Sweden.

What I do not understand is why Hungary delayed the ratification for so long. Is this really the reason that Sweden does not respect for Hungarian values? If that is the case, this is just childish behavour from both parties. Or is there another reason, something deeper why Hungary delays the ratification? I hope the purpose of the government is not to serve Russia’s interest. In my opinion, if Russia continues to expand, it will never stop, it will get more and more hungry, so Russia should stop or should be stopped. The declination of the meeting is understandable so I am curious to know how the country will explain the delay because no specific concerns were mentioned about Sweden.
