Earlier, I was not considering going to vote, but everyone is talking about the European Parliament and the local elections in Hungary today. The thing is, I have not been particularly engaged in politics in the past few months and I do not know much about the parties but I have been doing research on them today. At the present, there are two parties that I sympathize with. I am on the fence about voting for Momentum and Mindenki Magyarországé Néppárt.
Momentum is generally pro-European, pro-globalization, and anti-Putin, asserting that Hungary can uphold its interests while fulfilling its commitments to the European Union. Momentum’s social views are largely progressive, supporting same-sex marriage, the decriminalization of cannabis, and abortion rights. Despite this, the party identifies as centrist and rejects classification on either side of the political spectrum. It calls for bipartisan cooperation, emphasizing in its mission statement that Hungary must not be divided by ideological battles, but brought together by common goals.
The Everybody’s Hungary People’s Party (Hungarian: Mindenki Magyarországa Néppárt; MMM), is a Hungarian political party established to support independent opposition and provide alternatives to Fidesz candidates in local elections. Initially not describing itself as a political party, the Movement was founded by Péter Márki-Zay and his associates in 2018 to promote cooperation among Hungary’s fragmented opposition parties. The party has a 12-point platform that includes the rule of law, freedom of the press, alignment with the West (as opposed to with Vladimir Putin), entry into the eurozone, and protection of borders against illegal immigration.
My initial feeling was to vote for Momentum but their attitude to the border protection and illegal immigrant politics made me a bit unsure. Then I read the program of MMN and I like it too. To be honest, I have no idea which one I should choose; I think I will just read more on their programs. Perhaps reading more about the aims and goals of Momentum will convince me.
I do not know.
