A Spontaneous Escape to Balatonfüred

We ultimately decided on Friday for our trip to Balatonfüred — and it wasn’t easy choosing between Friday or Saturday. As both days were possible, I checked the weather app: it showed that Friday would be sunnier than Saturday. So, in the end, the weather made the decision for us, and I’m truly grateful it did.

Although we hadn’t booked anything yet, we mentally prepared for the possibility of staying overnight. Before we left, I took my wife to the hospital for a blood test required in her third trimester. Since it was early when we arrived, we still had plenty of time ahead. However, she had forgotten her ID cards at home. Fortunately, the hospital administrator was kind and let us proceed with no issues.

Once in Balatonfüred, we stopped by Hotel Annabella to inquire about a room. The receptionist offered a single room, but it only faced the parking lot — not ideal, so we declined. Yet, we still considered staying the night. After all, once our little girl arrives, we may not get many spontaneous moments like this. Just in case, my wife opened her Booking.com app, and surprisingly found a lakeside-view room available. Why hadn’t the receptionist mentioned it? We turned back, booked the room, and checked in — although the hotel staff’s professionalism was questionable.

Before heading to our room, we wandered down to the city centre and found a bench overlooking the lake. We sat there soaking in the scenery while waiting until we got hungry. Eventually, I started to feel peckish, so I ordered some pancakes.

The room turned out to be lovely, complete with a nice balcony facing the lake. While my wife took a shower, I made my way to the wellness and indoor pool area to relax. I chose a spot in the farthest corner by the window — which meant my wife had to walk quite a bit to join me. We settled in comfortably: she watched short videos and solved puzzles, while I buried myself in a history book.

Later, we had a pleasant dinner. I tried an odd combination: spaghetti with fish sauce and breaded chicken — surprisingly tasty, though eccentric. My wife finished her meal with some mini cakes. She went straight to bed soon after. I lingered on the balcony, then took a long shower (yes, the water was complimentary!), and finally slipped into bed feeling refreshed.

It was a simple yet perfect getaway — all because Friday won on weather 😊
