I’m a fan of Games of Thrones, my wife and me became obsessed with it and can’t stop watching it almost every night. We are currently in season 5. But I just can’t help but form an opinion about this world.
I wonder if the everyday life of this fictional Middle Ages depicted in this series is accurate. There doesn’t seem to be much point in living in a world like this where violence and death are so common: anyone could be killed by a sword or an arrow without warning anytime, any moment. You always have to look behind your shoulders and that is just crazy. I always tell myself if hell exists, this must be it.
Murder appears to be a free-for-all, with no consequences unless the victim is of noble birth, a member of the royal family, or someone close to the king. You live your daily life, work for your family and you can just get killed anytime and it is terrible. Everyone seems to revel in the act of taking a life; it’s barbaric. On top of that, rape is treated as something trivial – no one stops the perpetrators from doing what they please. It’s terrifying. It is a world where murder, rape, brutality, and violence can take place without consequences.
If the Middle Ages were like this, thank Goodness I live in modern times – where there are still issues of violence (crime, terrorists, dictators, wars), but in a global sense nowhere near as extreme and is drastically reduced – law, police, and authorities put an end to this barbaric world.
