I read on Index that Gergely Gulyás had stated that Hungary committed to adopting the euro when it joined the EU. However, changes in EU regulations raise questions about whether this obligation still stands. The government has not disputed it yet. The introduction of the euro means giving up independent monetary policy.
According to Gergely Gulyás, it appears that Hungary will not adopt the euro. This statement, delivered formally, has further fueled my skepticism about introducing the euro in our country. Some individuals opposed to the government claim that keeping the euro out allows for increased corruption, although I find it difficult to comprehend how this would work.
Nevertheless, as an ordinary citizen, I would appreciate having the euro as our currency. It would make me feel more connected to Europe and provide a sense of security with a strong currency. In fact, I exchange some of my forint into euros every week, just to be prepared.
Naturally, I have more trust in stronger currencies. Unfortunately, the recent statement from Gergely Gulyás is disappointing, indicating that we will have to live without the euro for the time being.
