Exploring Jewish Life in Budapest during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy

One of our subject is early modern Hungarian history and I had to go to Budapest to visit some museums with our teacher. Our subject was the local Jewish communities in Budapest in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

During the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (1867–1918), Budapest became a major center of Jewish life in Hungary. Many Jewish people lived in the city, working as merchants, craftsmen, and professionals. They contributed significantly to Budapest’s culture, economy, and education. Synagogues, schools, and cultural institutions flourished, especially in districts like Erzsébetváros. Despite facing some social restrictions and occasional antisemitism, the Jewish community played an important role in shaping the city’s modern character.

We visited a mansion and a typical flat of a Jewish family. To be honest, I am happy that I live in this era. I have no desire to live in those days. Life was much harder and even the atmosphere of those places of living was so depressing to me.
