Is Technology Making Us Smarter—or Just Dumber?

I remember when I first subscribed for an Internet plan. It was so convenient and exciting to read news online! I was the first who could get the news the quickest way compared to newspapers. I did not have to wait long to get the latest news. But then, I gradually got disappointed when more and the more and more clickbait titles and sensational articles started flooding the Internet. And it turned into a serious fight for profit, which made me tired and I just put more and more websites onto my blacklist.

And then came Facebook. It was so cool to find my old friends and acquaintances again, people who I had not talked to long time ago or I did not recall at all. I remember initiating meaningful topics even in my own newsfeed without making a fool of myself. We could talk about politics, religion, science, history, philosophy – there were meaningful conversations. Nowadays? Floods of short videos, dumb pictures, hurtful comments, hatred, meaningless replies everywhere. If you try to start a serious conversation in your newsfeed, I am sure that your friends will think you are weird.

So no more Facebook from my part, I only keep it because I need to keep the contact with my family, my close friends and classmates. Also, no more reading online news, I am shifting to real newspapers and books.

Then here is AI. This is the latest cool digital thing I have met. I can ask anything shamelessly; it does not get tired of me, quick to give me information, helps in a number of tasks. However, the question remains: how long will it continue to prevail? Because I am sure that it will also be messed up by humans, just like it happened to websites, and the social media. I don’t know how yet, but it will end up the same way.
