Scientists have detected something migrating under arctic ice and now they are worried about what may happen if it escapes

A study published in Frontiers in Earth Science reports the detection of migrating natural gases, specifically methane, beneath arctic permafrost on Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. The study suggests that diminishing ice coverage in the region poses a risk of methane escape, potentially leading to greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to rising temperatures. The size of the trapped gas is unknown, but cases studied produced several million cubic meters in less than a decade. The researchers warn that as arctic permafrost continues to thaw, the release of methane could have significant climate impacts, potentially triggering a warming cycle and further permafrost thawing. The study indicates that similar leaks could occur in other arctic regions.

This sounds scary. We already have a big problem with the climate change, this natural process would make things much worse. But it seems the governments do not care for the planet and they go as far as the planet becomes totally uninhabitable. These type of phenomena can be considered as warning signs but so what? Nothing happens and nothing will happen because it is not the interest of the governments. Yes, it is terribly sad but what can we do, simple citiziens? I am not a scientist, but at least, could we not harness this methane gas somehow, to use it as energy or something?
