Subbing as a Referee

I was filling in for another teacher and had to lead a PE class. Since I’m not exactly the most creative when it comes to physical education, I decided to keep things simple—I took the students out to the yard and let them play ball games.

Two girls started playing volleyball. They invited me to join, but I knew I’d just end up looking awkward—I’m really not good at these types of games. So instead, I told them I’d join as the referee.

Of course, I had no idea what the actual rules were, so I just made them up as we went along. Every now and then, I’d randomly announce who scored a point, trying my best to stay fair so they wouldn’t argue.

In the end, they seemed to really enjoy the game, so I guess I did a decent job. Before we finished, I told them they had both played really well.
